The Power of Social Networking in an Oprah FlashMob

October, 2009

You've probably received an invite to Linkedin, a popular corporate social networking site. Or maybe you've heard your teenage son or daughter talk about the coolness of Facebook or MySpace. Social networking-interactive, collaborative online communities created by technology-has certainly gone mainstream. And now it's becoming a value-added feature of the corporate landscape.

If you want to see the power of social networking in action, take a look at the video from Oprah's website.

Apparently, 800 Oprah fans, Twitter and Facebook fans mobilized through tweets and Facebook posts to meet up at Oprah's kickoff to her 24th season. The Black Eyed Peas performed their hit "I've Got a Feeling." Twenty professional dancers taught the other fans the dance they made up. These 800 were then given the task to teach the other 20,000+ people how to perform the dance the day of the taping. The look on Oprah's face as, little by little, the one lone dancer turns into a FlashMob frenzy is priceless. And this all happened in the blink of an eye!
